Environmental Literacy
We focus on three types of environmental literacy outreach.
Summer Outreach
The Environment Center Scholars work with faculty to develop fun field days for urban kids. Kids engage with college students on a number of wild activities that teach environmental principles. We have partnered with Humble Hustle, YMCA of Salem, West End Center, and the Northwest (Roanoke) Faith Partnership.
High School Outreach
Faculty and college students work with local high school teachers on environmental programing at the Environment Center. We have partnered with North Cross School, Roanoke County Governors School, and Community High School – Roanoke.
Campus Community Outreach
Environment Center Enthusiasts (students who are involved in the EC through many channels) and faculty put on events for the college community. At an open house, participants went on a scavenger hunt and found “hiding” enthusiasts who talked about the unique features and ongoing research at the Environment Center. At the Suburban Wild Event, Environmental Center Scholars had demonstrations illustrating the value of native plants and how to improve wildlife habitat in suburban landscapes.
