  • Michelle De La Cruz was the 12th Maroon to be named a Benjamin A. Gilman Scholar. She studied criminal law, advanced French, and law and technology at Vesalius College in Brussels, Belgium. She graduated from Roanoke in 2020 with a major in criminal justice and a concentration in legal studies.

  • Vanessa Pearson is the 11th Roanoke College student selected as a Gilman Scholar. Pearson will spend the Spring 2019 semester in Australia at James Cook University taking psychology, education and Australian history classes.

  • Destinee Harper is the 8th Roanoke College student appointed to the US-UK Fulbright Summer Institute. Harper will spend four weeks in June and July at the University of Sussex where she will study “Britishness and British culture.”

  • Maggie Fitzgerald received a Fulbright to teach English in Oviedo, a city in northern Spain. Fitzgerald graduated in 2018 as a history major with a minor in secondary education and a concentration in African and African Diaspora.

  • Samuel McKnight was awarded a Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to study Russian language summer of 2018 in Vladimir, Russia. He is the first Roanoke College student to receive this competitive award.

An alumnus, Christopher G. Earnhart, received a National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Fellowship for doctoral work in immunology. He graduated with a B.A. in Biology.

Ana K. Planavsky (whose area is evolutionary biology) received Honorable Mention in the 2000-2001 NSF competition. Ana graduated with a B.S. in Biology.

Matthew L. Roberts became a Finalist in the Truman competition (one of 5 from Virginia and 230 nationwide). He graduated with a B.A. in Political Science and a minor in Computer Science.

Adiyah A. Ali received a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Scholarship for Minority Students for this past academic year. She graduated with a B.A. in International Relations.

Brian B. Clark received a Udall Scholarship. Brian graduated with majors in both Environmental Science and Religion/Philosophy.

Susan M. Foster, an alumna, received a Fulbright Award for research in Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Susan graduated with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Spanish.

Tania L. Connor made the Third Team and in 1995 Lora Schwehr received an honorable mention of the All-USA Academic Team; both were recognized in the USA Today newspaper. Tania graduated with a B.S. in Biology; Lora graduated with majors in both Mathematics and Physics.
