Mr. Wylie W. Barrow '26

Wylie W. Barrow is a native of Rumson, New Jersey. He attended Central High School in Washington, D.C. He attended and graduated from Roanoke College in 1926 with a B.S. degree. Wylie continued his education at George Washington University Law School, where he graduated from him 1930. He was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity, and was admitted to practice U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and U.S. Court of Appeals.

Wylie was treasurer of the Washington Gas Light Company in Washington, D.C., and was associated with that company for nearly forty years. He also was employed by the B & O Railroad and worked in sales for the Life Insurance Company of Virginia. He was published in the Washington Gas Company annual reports (1948-1963), and received citations in every year from Financial World Magazine.

Wylie maintained a continuing interest in education long after his received his degrees. For nearly ten years (1949-1958), he was a member of the Montgomery County (MD) Board of Education. He was president of the board in 1954. He was the Washington area chairman for two capital gift campaigns for Roanoke during this time. Wylie was a leading volunteer worker for the American Cancer Society. He was a national director of A.C.S., and in 1963 he received the society's St. George's Medal and Citation for outstanding contributions to cancer control.

Wylie's active concentration in Roanoke College brought him the presidency of the General Alumni Association in 1945, and he was also the past president of the Washington Alumni Chapter. Wylie was the Chairman of the Library Campaign in 1961 in the Washington D.C. area, and was Chairman of the Anniversary Challenge Campaign in 1967 in the same area.

Other organizations that Mr. Barrow belonged to and invested his time and energy in included U.S. Savings Bonds (vice chairman of the utilities division and chairman of payroll savings committee of the District of Columbia), Boy Scouts of America (chairman of fund campaigns, member of the executive board of the national capital area council, member of the advisory council to the executive board), The Metropolitan Police Boys Club (member of the board of directory), The American Red Cross (chairman of annual fund campaign), and Goodwill Industries (member of the board of trustees and executive committee).

Wylie was awarded the Roanoke College Medal on October 28, 1967 for his high degree of achievement. He was married to Mary M. McQueen and the two raised three children together; Wylie W. Barrow Jr., Meredith Barrow Marciniszyn, and Marilyn Barrow Sutherland.
