Campus Recreation Fellows

Are you interested in gaining experience and leadership skills working as part of a team in outdoor adventures, fitness, or recreational sports? Campus Recreation Fellows will work with professional staff, student leadership team, and student staff to encourage healthy lifestyles and enrich the Roanoke College community as a whole. Campus Recreation offers different fellowship opportunities based on interest, experience, and professional goals of its fellows. All fellows will receive ample opportunities for professional development through conference participation and certification classes.

Those interested in aquatics will be earn a Lifeguarding certification through a respected institution.

Aquatics staff will be responsible for serving as a lifeguard at the pool and related responsibilities of the role.

Understand and implement emergency procedures as they relate to an aquatic setting.

Campus Recreation Media and Marketing Fellows are creative individuals who think outside the box and keep up with social media trends. Duties may include coordinating and managing events, creating flyers and posters, posting on social media, or collaborating with organizations across campus.

The Esports Fellows will have the opportunity to specialize in this unique area of campus recreation. 

Esports Fellows will encourage teamwork and leadership for various games, tournaments, and events, as well as coordination of events. Esports Fellows will take the lead on streaming games and tournaments for participants.

 Esports Fellows may introduce new games and activities to the Esports scene at Roanoke, expanding the campus reach. 

The Fitness Fellow will have the opportunity to specialize in a unique area of fitness: the fitness center, group fitness, or personal training.

Fitness Center

Fitness Center attendants will assist patrons of the fitness center during their exercise routines as requested (i.e. spotting). - Fitness Center attendants will learn various types of workout equipment and machines with respect to function, proper use, maintenance, and organization.

Group Fitness

Those interested in group fitness will earn certification to teach in their respective class type included but not limited to Pound, Zumba, BodyCombat, and yoga.

Group Fitness instructors will work with students during group fitness classes in a safe and effective manner with the ability to make modifications as necessary based on participants’ varying abilities.

Personal Training

Those interested in personal training will become certified through an accredited institution (ACE, ACSM, NASM, or NCSA). - Personal trainers will conduct consultations according to industry standard.

Personal trainers will work with clients in setting and achieving reasonable goals in an a safe and effective manner with the ability to make modifications as necessary and keep the client motivated

Those interested in outdoor adventures will earn a certification in wilderness medicine through a respected institution such as SOLO or WMA.

Outdoor Adventures staff will effectively and safely guide trips for our Outdoor Adventures program with skills including but not limited to trip planning, budgeting, risk management, and group dynamics.

Outdoor Adventures staff will become well-versed in outdoor leadership theory and practices with an emphasis on hands-on experiential learning.

Outdoor Adventures staff will learn technical skills related to various outdoor activities such as backpacking, rock climbing, caving, mountain biking, and whitewater paddling.

Outdoor Adventures staff will make informed decisions related to outdoor gear purchasing, function, maintenance, and repair.

The Recreational Sports Fellow will have the opportunity to specialize in a unique area of sports: intramurals or club sports.

Intramurals

Intramural referees and scorekeepers will be responsible for setup and breakdown of equipment for Intramural Sports contests.

Intramural referees will understand rules and officiating techniques for various sports offered as well as educate participants while implementing rules fairly and consistently during Intramural Sports contests.

Intramural scorekeepers will maintain an accurate score and time throughout the competition with attention to points, fouls, and other statistics as assigned.

Club Sports

Club Sports assistants will be responsible for setup and breakdown of equipment for Club Sports contests.

Club Sports assistants will submit a complete game report detailing the results.

Club Sports assistants will check rosters of club teams to ensure each player has signed a waiver and paid their member dues. They will also assist with distributing, tracking, and collecting uniform and equipment inventory.

Candidates for Campus Recreation Fellows should have qualities that include:

• A passion for fitness and physical health in any capacity.
• Creative thinking and problem-solving abilities.
• Willingness to learn, honesty, dependability, and determination.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to lead peers in dynamic situations.

Applying to the program begins with an online application, including a one-page letter detailing why you are interested in working as a Campus Recreation Fellow, reasoning behind your chosen focus within the department, and any relevant experiences or qualifications.

If you are chosen as a finalist, you will interview with college staff and mentors during a campus visit and receive a $500 scholarship per year. If you are chosen as a Fellow, you will also receive an on-campus work opportunity to earn an hourly wage dependent on area of interest.
