Marketing & Communications
Overview
As a Marketing & Communications Fellow, you will work with a team of dedicated students and Roanoke College Marketing & Communications staff members on projects that promote Roanoke College.
Program Components
Training and Mentoring
In addition to working one-on-one with a Marketing & Communications staff member, you will take part in communications training sessions. Taught by both College and local experts, these sessions are designed to give you practical tips in areas such as shooting photography or videography, writing news stories and features, interviewing techniques, website production, brand and marketing strategy, social media communication, and graphic design fundamentals.
Marketing & Communications Fellows can participate in the following areas:
Graphic Design
- Update, design and produce brochures, advertisements, postcards, posters and other printed materials
- Assist with photo shoots and help manage the photo library
- Build a portfolio of work you can show to potential employers or graduate schools
Web & Social Media
- Update and create webpages, and meet with faculty and staff about their needs
- Assist with social media monitoring and content creation
- Assist with photo and video shoots
News and Feature Writing
- Write news releases, news stories and features
- See your work published on the college website, e-newsletter, alumni magazine and social media
- Build a portfolio of work you can show to potential employers or graduate schools
Photography and Videography
- Take photographs or video of College events and happenings
- Edit video clips into finished pieces
- Help schedule and assist with large shoots
Qualifications
Ideal candidates for the Marketing & Communications Fellows Program have qualities that include:
- Strong interest in communications, events, PR or marketing
- Strong writing skills
- Self-motivated/self-starter
- Dependable and reliable
- Attention to detail
- Experience or technical skills in the above areas are a plus, but not necessary
Application Details
Applying to the program begins with an online application, including a letter detailing why you are interested in working as a Marketing & Communications Fellow, what areas of communications interests you the most, and any relevant experience, skills or qualifications you have. You are also invited to submit an optional sample of your work (ex. writing, photography, design, etc.).
Roanoke College's Marketing & Communications Department includes experts with communications experience from industries as diverse as non-profit, news media, consumer electronics, advertising, technology, architecture, environmental graphics, and, of course, higher education.
