Teresa Gereaux, gereaux@roanoke.edu false MM/DD/YYYYProfessor Truong Le and students in his INQ250 class will host a viewing of the total solar eclipse on the Back Quad on the afternoon of April 8, 2024. The eclipse will begin around 2 p.m. and end around 3:50 p.m. Professor Le and his students will have telescopes with solar filters for guests to take turns safely viewing the eclipse. They will also have a limited number of eclipse-viewing glasses, so please share your pair with a friend! If you have your own glasses, do bring those.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and earth, briefly covering the sun. This reveals the sun’s white outer atmosphere, called the corona. On April 8, the moon’s shadow will sweep across the United States, from Texas to Maine. In Roanoke, Virginia, there will be roughly 86% coverage. There won’t be another U.S. eclipse spanning coast to coast until 2045, so be sure to come out and experience this extraordinary event!
