Health Careers
Health Careers and the Healthcare World at Roanoke College
Interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare world?
At Roanoke, we - the members of the Health Careers Advising Board (HCAB) - want to support your dream of becoming an active contributor to the health and well-being of others.
But first we need to define an important term, because "healthcare" is a lot bigger than most people realize! And you can contribute to the health and well-being of others in ways you might not have considered.
"Healthcare World"? What's that?
When asked if they can name a healthcare occupation, most people would likely answer "doctor" or "dentist" or (perhaps - especially if they're athletes) "physical therapist."
While these are obviously great (and correct!) answers, they overlook a range of people who contribute to our nation's healthcare, such as
- healthcare administrators
- art therapists
- medical communicators
- water authority employees
- (and so, so many more!)
At Roanoke, any career that focuses on facilitating wholeness and well-being in others is included in our definition of "heath careers," and we refer to people with health careers and their work collectively as the "healthcare world."
And the members of HCAB are dedicated to helping all students who want to become part of the healthcare world to achieve that goal and live that dream, regardless of major or intended health career.
