Fellowships
Short (two to six weeks) and long-term (six to twelve months) fellowships are listed below. The list, which is ordered alphabetically within discipline, is not intended to be an exhaustive list. Deadlines and weblinks are checked every six months in order to keep the information updated.
Arts
George and Eliza Howard Foundation: Awards fellowships for independent projects in the fields of visual arts, media studies, and the history of art and architecture. Stipends for one year are $30,000.

MacDowell Colony – Residencies for Writers, Composers, and Artists: Funding is available to artists of all type for residencies at the colony. Located in Peterborough, New Hampshire.

Vermont Studio Center: Offers over 50 Full Fellowships a year, which are open to all artists and writers. To apply for a VSC Fellowship, based on merit, for four weeks at no fee, submit your application for the jury reviews VSC holds three times a year.

Virginia Center for the Creative Arts: The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts is a working retreat for writers, visual artists, and composers. It is located at Mt. San Angelo, a 450-acre estate in Amherst County, Virginia, approximately 160 miles southwest of Washington D.C. The VCCA provides residential Fellowships of two weeks to two months in a rural setting where artists may work, free from the distractions and responsibilities of day-to-day life.

Brown Foundation: The Brown Foundation Fellowships Program is based at Dora Maar House in Menerbes, France and provides study or studio space, travel expenses, and stipend to mid-career artists, writers, and other professionals in the humanities. There are two deadlines: October 15, for fellowships between March 1 and June 30; and February 15, for fellowships between July 1 and November 30.

Humanities
American Academy in Berlin: Offers independent study in Berlin for an academic semester or, in very rare cases, for an entire academic year. Benefits include a stipend ranging from $3,500 to $5,000 per month of residency, round-trip airfare, and a generous apartment with partial board at the Hans Arnhold Center, a historic lakeside villa in the Wannsee district of Berlin.

American Antiquarian Society: Offers three broad categories of visiting research fellowships, with tenures ranging from one to twelve months. All of the fellowships are designed to enable scholars, advanced graduate students, and others to spend an uninterrupted block of time doing research in the AAS library on their projects and discussing their work with others.

American Council of Learned Societies: Supports scholarship in the humanities and humanities-related social sciences.

American Institute of Indian Studies: Provides fellowships for the advancement of knowledge and understanding of India, its people, and culture. For Senior Research Fellowships award periods range from six to nine months. For senior short-term fellowships, the award period is up to four months.

American Philosophical Society: Offers fellowship programs in a wide range of fields. Short-term residential Library Fellowships are offered. Sabbatical Fellowships are provided to mid-career faculty.

Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library: Provides short-term fellowships to support visiting scholars pursuing research in its collection of rare books and manuscripts in the humanities. The fellowships pay for travel costs to and from New Haven and living allowance. Fellowships, normally granted for one month, must be taken up between September 1 and May 31.

John Carter Brown Library: Invited scholars to conduct research in the fields of the colonial history of the Americas, North and South, including all aspects of the European, African, and Native American involvement. The program offers short-term fellowships for periods of two to four months with a stipend of $1,800 per month and long-term fellowships for periods of five to nine months with a stipend of $4,000 per month.

Cornell University Society for the Humanities Fellowships: While in residence at Cornell, postdoctoral fellows hold department affiliation and have limited teaching duties and the opportunity for scholarly work.

Frederick Douglass Institute Fellowship Program at the University of Rochester: Offers postdoctoral fellowship to scholars in a field related to the African-American experience. The program provides its Fellows an opportunity to teach two courses (one per semester) in their area of specialization. It carries an annual stipend of $40,000 and a $3,000 fund for research-related activities.

Ford Foundation: Offers research-based study in the sciences and humanities. The dissertation fellowship offers nine months to one year for writing the dissertation.

English Language Fellow Program: Promotes English language learning around the world, and fosters mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and people of other countries. The Fellow Program is administered by Georgetown University’s Center for Intercultural Education and Development (CIED). Fellows will be awarded a stipend and the cost of transportation, food, utilities and housing.

Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas: Offers fellowships that support scholarly research projects in all areas of the humanities and offers stipends of $1,000-3,000 per month.

Howard Foundation: Awards fellowships for independent projects in the fields of visual arts, media studies, and the history of art and architecture. Stipends for one year are $30,000.

Indiana University: The Lilly Library invites applications for visiting fellowships for research in residence in its collections. Its holdings support research in British, French, and American literature and history; the literature of voyages and exploration, specifically the European expansion in the Americas; early printing, and the Church, children's literature, music; film, radio and television; medicine, science, and architecture; and food and drink.

Institute of American Cultures: Offers four fellowships that focus on conducting and theorizing oral history research in African American, American Indian, Asian American, and Chicano communities. The fellowship includes a stipend that ranges from $32,000 to $35,000 in research support, and health benefits. Appointments are for a nine-month period beginning on October 1.

Jentel Artist Residency Program: Offers dedicated individuals a supportive environment in which to further their creative development. Here artists and writers experience unfettered time to allow for thoughtful reflection and meditation on the creative process in a setting that preserves the agricultural and historical integrity of the land. Four-week residencies are offered for writers of all genres for professional development.

John F. Kennedy Library Foundation: Offers competitive research fellowships and grants every year to scholars and students who wish to make use of the archival holdings of the John F. Kennedy Library and Museu. Grant applications are evaluated on the basis of expected utilization of available holdings of the Library, the degree to which they address research needs in Kennedy period studies, and the qualifications of applicants.

Library Company of Philadelphia's Program in Early American Economy and Society: Offers postdoctoral research fellowship. A stipend of $40,000 is tenable for nine consecutive months of residency. It may also be divided between two scholars, who would each receive $20,000.

Mary Baker Eddy Library in Boston: Provides fellowships to scholars for research in the fields of women's history, spirituality and health, religious studies, 19th-century history, and journalism. Research fellows are awarded in the amount of $700 per scholar week.

National Endowment for the Humanities: Fellowships support individuals pursuing advanced research in the humanities that contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the general public's understanding of the humanities.

National Humanities Center: Offers 40 residential fellowships for advanced study in all fields of the humanities. Applicants with an interest in the impact of recent scientific research on the human attributes of autonomy, singularity, and creativity are encouraged to apply. Individual fellowships are also available in the following fields: art history or visual culture, French history or culture, Asian Studies, theology, American art history, and environmental history.

Newberry Library – Fellowship in the Humanities: Offers long and short term fellowships in numerous areas of the humanities.

Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program: Enables democracy activists, practitioners, scholars, and journalists from around the world to deepen their understanding of democracy. Located in Washington , D.C. , Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program maintain full residence at the International Forum for Democratic Studies for periods ranging from three to ten months. Each fellow receives a monthly stipend for living expenses, plus health insurance and reimbursement for travel to and from Washington , D.C.

Stanford Humanities Center: Offers external fellowships to faculty from universities in the United States and other countries. External fellows come from all ranks of the professoriate and from a wide variety of colleges and universities.

Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars: Provides residential fellowship in Washington, D.C. for nine months for the research and study of humanities and social science. Fellows also work with policy-makers and Wilson Center staff.

American Antiquarian Society: Offers short-term academic research fellowships for one to three months each and long-term academic research fellowships for four to twelve months.

Al Qasimi Foundation: Invites potential visiting schoars to submit proposals for conducting field research in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates. Proposals should address issues related to one of the foundation's research priority areas: education, public health (social dimensions), urban and community development.

American Philosophical Society: Offers short term residential fellowships for conducting research on the history of American science and technology and early American history and culture in its collections. Applicants in any relevant field of scholarship may apply.

Council of American Overseas Research: Offers its Multi-Country Fellowship program to U.S. doctoral candidates and scholars who have already earned their Ph.D. The fellowship supports advanced regional or trans-regional research in the humanities, social sciences, or allied natural sciences. Applicants are eligible to apply as individuals or in teams. Scholars must carry out research in two or more countries outside the U.S., at least one of which hosts a participating overseas research center.

Council for European Studies: Applications are invited for the Council for European Studies' 2014 Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowships in European Studies. The fellowship provides a $25,000 stipend, as well as assistance in securing reimbursements or waivers in eligible health insurance and candidacy fees.

James Jones First Novel: Wilkes University is accepting entries for its annual James Jones First Novel Fellowship, which will be awarded to an American author of a first fiction novel-in-progress. The winner will receive an award of $10,000 and two runners-up will receive awards of $750 each. Manuscripts may be submitted for publication simultaneously, but the Society must be notified of acceptance elsewhere.

National Endowment for the Arts' Literature: Offers $25,000 grants in prose (fiction and creative nonfiction) and poetry to published creative writers. The grant enables writers to set aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career advancement. The program operates on a two-year cycle with fellowships in prose and poetry available in alternating years.

International
Alexander von Humboldt Foundation: Welcomes highly qualified, foreign scientists and scholars of all nationalities, who hold doctorates awarded within the past 12 years, to carry out research projects of their own choice in Germany. Applicants may be submitted for long-term research stays of at least six and at most twelve months in Germany. The Foundation offers every researcher a monthly research fellowship.

Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies: Offers funding for up to one-year of research support at the Freie Universitat Berlin and is open to scholars in all social sciences and humanities disciplines, including historians working on the period since the mid-18th century.

Fulbright Scholars Awards: Provides short-term opportunities for research abroad. Applications accepted in business administration,communications, economics, education, environmental science, information technology, law, political science, sociology, and U.S. studies.

German Marshall Fund of the United States: Promotes the study of international and domestic policies, support comparative research and debate on key issues, and assist policy and opinion leaders’ understanding of these issues.

American Academy in Berlin: Welcome applications for its fellowships from emerging as well as established scholars, writers, and professionals. The duration of the fellowships are usually for an academic semester or an entire academic year. Fellows will receive round-trip airfare, housing at the Academy, partial board, and a stipend each month. Writers much have published at least one book at the time of application.

Multidisciplinary
Jefferson Science Fellows: Tenured academic scientists and engineers from U.S. institutions of higher learning are eligible for selection to be Jefferson Science Fellows. Each Fellow will spend one year at the U.S. Department of State for an on-site assignment in Washington, D.C. that may also involve extended stays at U.S. foreign embassies and/or missions. A stipend of $50,000 is intended to offset the costs of temporary living quarters in the Washington, D.C.

Sciences
American Association for the Advancement of Science: Sponsors 10 science and technology policy fellowship programs to provide the opportunity for accomplished and societally aware postdoctoral to midcareer scientists and engineers to participate in and contribute to the public policy making process of the federal government.

Jane N. Ryland Fellowship Program: Offers EDUCAUSE grant program of face-to-face learning opportunities in the sphere of information technology. Awards will cover the costs of registration fees, transportation and housing costs.

Office of Naval Research: The Summer Faculty Research Program connects researchers from colleges and universities with scientists and engineers at the Department of the Navy's laboratories for 10 weeks during the summer. Participants will receive a stipend of about $1,400 to $1,900 per week. Relocations assistance is also provided. The Sabbatical Leave Program provides fellowships appointments for a minimum of one semester to a maximum of one year in length. Receive a monthly stipend making up the diference between salary and sabbatical leave pay from their home institution. Relocation and travel assistance are provided to qualifying participants.

Linda Hall Library: Linda Hall Library Resident in Kansas City, Missouri offers one to nine month resident fellowships to support research projects in science, engineering, and technology; in the history of science, engineering, and technology; or in interdisciplinary topics that link science or technology to the broader culture. The fellowships provide up to $3,500 per month.

National Research Council: The National Research Council of the National Academies offers awards for postdoctoral and senior research in residence at U.S. federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. Awards are offered in all fields of science and engineering. Awards include generous stipends, relocation, support for professional travel, and health insurance.

Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute: Invites applications for the Earl S. Tupper three-year post doctoral fellowship in the areas represented by the scientific staff. Research should be based at one of the STRI facilities, however, proposals that include comparative research in other tropical countries will be considered.

Social Sciences
Center for Khmer Studies: Accepting applications from U.S. scholars for research fellowships in Cambodia. Open to U.S. doctoral candidates and scholars in the social sciences and humanities. Can pursue research in other countries in mainland Southeast Asia provided that part of their research is undertaken in Cambodia.

Beyster and Kelso Fellowships: The Beyster and Kelso fellowships support studies of employee ownership, profit sharing, and broad-based stock options in the corporation and in society, and the idea and practice of broadened ownership of capital in a democratic society in the United States. Most stipends are for $25,000 or $12,500 and are awarded at the scholars' home university or for residency at Rutgers University School f Management and Labor Relations.
