IL for Faculty
Faculty should find the links here helpful when designing or teaching an IL course. Because timelines and needs vary significantly with the type of course, most materials here are subdivided into TRAVEL vs FIELD TRIP vs CAMPUS courses. Information on Internships and Independent Studies for IL credit are on the main IL webpage.
The Courses Offered List for May Term is established long before the courses are taught. Chairs submit a plan in October, a full year and a half before the start of the term. Faculty should discuss their plans with their chairs early. Faculty who wish to offer a travel course must request a travel slot 24 months before the course will actually travel. Requests to travel will nearly always get approved for this. Occasionally, however, faculty will be asked to wait to ensure that we do not have more travel courses than students to fill them. Faculty are encouraged to talk about their plans with the General Education Director.
Course proposals are due January 20, 15 months before a new IL course is taught. Course Proposal Forms are found on the Course Proposal and Syllabi page.
