Mission Statement
About Our Program
The Department of Modern Languages seeks to develop second language acquisition through engaging and interactive curricula that enrich students’ cross-cultural and linguistic understandings. We aim to help them become globally-cultured and self-aware persons able to view the world from multiple perspectives. Through effective written and oral communication and the enhancement of critical thinking skills, students learn to navigate in a diverse world as they prepare for career paths, graduate study, or professional training, and a lifetime of active learning.
Mission Statement
The aim of the Modern Languages department is twofold: to develop linguistic and cultural skills, and to apply them in professional life. Students will use these skills in their communities while also fostering a life-long commitment to learning in a globalized society.
- To advance proficiency and accuracy in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding the target language as well as mindfulness of cross-cultural professional etiquette appropriate to different cultural contexts
- To exercise language skills in one’s professional career.
- To show interpretative, analytical, and critical thinking skills with respect to cultural, literary, and linguistic manifestations from the region of interest.
- To identify and value traits of linguistic variation between the different variants of the target language.
- To understand the history, the role, and the impact of the target language in the United States.
- To explore and evaluate one’s cultural identity in relation to others in a global community.
