The Service to All Roanoke (STAR) Awards were given to four Roanoke College employees on Dec. 18, 2024. The award is given to staff members who exceed expectations in their positions and embody the Maroon spirit by making a positive difference on and off campus.
The awards are handed out annually, and nominations are accepted based on three categories: hourly, non-exempt and exempt. Recipients receive a trophy and $1,000.
Lavelle Glenn was honored in the hourly category. As the bake shop coordinator, Glenn has made many delicious sweets and breads for the college over the past 18 years. Even with the high demand in the bake shop, he’s proven to be a great leader, collaborator and hard worker. He never shies away from a challenge, consistently providing high quality products for everyone to enjoy. Through quiet leadership and a positive attitude, Glenn lifts up his team and supports their overall success.
Sara Lloyd, manager of the Print Shop, received the award in the exempt category. She not only makes vibrant event posters or polished invitations; she oversaw the transformation of the Print Shop, helping to make it a reliable and well-oiled machine. When the Print Shop was moved across campus, she communicated with everyone thoroughly and stayed on top of orders. She’s also taken on many student mentors and supported various departments on campus with enthusiasm and care. Through Lloyd’s hard work, the Print Shop is now a standout creative resource on campus.
Jenna Alcorn, executive assistant of the vice president for Academic Affairs, was honored in the non-exempt category. She manages complex calendars, oversees budgets and handles sensitive situations with grace and dedication. She makes challenging tasks look easy and is able to disperse any tension in the room with her kindness and wit. Alcorn is the backbone to many important processes on campus. Her dedication and trust are what quietly keeps the department running smoothly.
Deborah Duncan, also honored in the non-exempt category, is the administrative assistant to the Chemistry and Environmental Studies departments, as well as the Health Professions Advisory Group. Duncan coordinates resources and manages student organizations across many different departments, making sure they are running smoothly. She also makes time to support campus-wide events and supports faculty committees with her attention to detail. She is known for her warmth and always makes sure everyone has a seat at the table.
Congratulations to the 2024 STAR Award winners! Thank you for leading by example and making Roanoke College a wonderful place to live, work and study.
