Roanoke to join digital resource consortium
July 01, 2015
Roanoke College is one of 42 colleges and universities selected to participate in the Consortium on Digital Resources for Teaching and Research, the Council of Independent Colleges announced June 30.
Through the use of Shared Shelf, a cloud-based uniform digital platform already employed by institutions such as Harvard and Cornell, Consortium members will be able to increase their capacities to store, preserve and catalogue collections of digital images, documents, audio and video files, and other types of materials while streamlining administrative capabilities.
Each institution in the Consortium has identified at least one collection that could be made more valuable and used more frequently if it were stored and shared via a networked solution. Roanoke will enhance and digitize the history and education departments' "Digital Storytelling Projects."
Consortium members will use a digital platform already employed by institutions such as Harvard and Cornell.
"Roanoke is a leader in many areas," President Michael Maxey said. "Using digital resources to improve teaching and learning is one of the most important areas where we are on the leading edge."
Members of the Consortium will convene once a year for three years to share ideas, collections, research projects and teaching strategies. The first of three workshops for Consortium members will take place Sept. 10–12 in Washington, D.C.
