October 22, 2015
Matthew Eberhardt '86, superintendent of Madison County Public Schools, was recently named the 2015 Outstanding Alumni Superintendent Award from the Curry School of Education Foundation.
Eberhardt is known for his signature mottos: "Whatever it takes," and "Every child. Every day," says Hubert Carmichael, assistant superintendent. "His passion for education and student success is inspiring and provides an unspoken motivation for everyone he comes in contact with."
An educator for nearly three decades, Eberhardt was appointed superintendent in Madison County in 2010 after 11 years as assistant superintendent for Clarke County Public Schools in Virginia. Since his appointment, Madison County's student dropout rate has plummeted to 0.6%, one of the lowest in Virginia, and on-time graduation rates have climbed to 94.6%. College enrollments have increased, as has the number of students earning advanced diplomas. The number of dual-enrollment courses taken by students has increased 200%. Preschool enrollment has doubled.
Eberhardt earned a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish from Roanoke. He went on to earn two graduate degrees in the field of administration and supervision from the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education, a master's of education in 1992 and an education doctorate in 1996.
