Roanoke marks history with celebrations, period costumes
November 17, 2015
Today, Roanoke College celebrates its long history and its founder and first president, the Rev. David Bittle. Today is Founders Day, which marks Bittle's 204th birthday.
Since 1993, faculty, staff and students have celebrated this historic date with numerous events for the campus community.
Some History professors and students are commemorating Founders Day this year by dressing in costumes that depict various historic time periods. In the past year, the History department has expanded its collection of period costumes used in class instruction and for special events.
Below is the Founders Day schedule of events:
- 7 p.m. — Bonfire on the Back Quad, with horse drawn carriage rides
- 7:30 p.m. — Parade to East Hill Cemetery in Salem
- 9 p.m. — Bittle Bash in College's Bank Building
