Two Roanoke College Students Named Goldwater Honorable Mentions

Caroline Peterson and Liam Lambert were named Honorable Mentions in the 2017 Barry S. Goldwater Scholarship competition.
A junior chemistry major from Chestertown, Maryland, Peterson plans to obtain a Ph.D. in chemistry and complete research in synthetic chemistry in order to develop improved tools for health-related applications. She conducts research under Dr. Stephen Hughes, assistant professor of chemistry.
Lambert, a sophomore math and physics double major from Staunton, intends to earn a Ph.D. in physics and engineering. He works on campus with Dr. Rama Balasubramanian, associate professor of physics.
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation awarded 240 scholarships for the 2017-2018 academic year to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from the United States. An additional 307 nominees were named as Honorable Mentions. The Goldwater Scholars were selected based on academic merit from a field of 1,286 natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering students nominated by the campus representatives from among 2,000 colleges and universities nationwide.
The Goldwater Scholarship Program honoring Senator Barry Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields.
