Hawk Sightings
October 06, 2016

When your mascot comes to life...and he's hungry. A red-tailed (ahem...Maroon-tailed) hawk sets up shop on campus.
This is a great example of wildlife adapting to human-dominated environments. Our campus is a manufactured habitat and for a top predator, a red-tailed hawk, to be able to make a living here, feeding on our overly tame, overfed squirrels is a fantastic example of adaptability and resilience of nature. As conservation-minded people, we need to think more about what kinds of human landscapes we can create that will allow us to coexist with predators, not just prey. This hawk taking up residence here is a nice testament to the health of the ecosystem created here by the amazing trees and other plants on the quads.
