City of Salem, ODAC and Roanoke College team up to host NCAA Championships
October 15, 2020
Thanks to a partnership between Roanoke College, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and the City of Salem, hundreds of NCAA athletes will remember Salem as the place where they won a championship.
The NCAA awarded 15 new Division III championships that will take place in Salem over the next six years, including the 50th Anniversary of the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, which is the D-III championship football game. It will be the first time since 2017 that Salem will have hosted the Stagg Bowl.
Besides the Stagg Bowl, Salem will host championships in women’s volleyball, men’s volleyball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s basketball, women’s softball and women’s lacrosse. Roanoke College will serve as the site of 10 of the newly announced championships.
Prior to Wednesday’s announcement, Roanoke College had been selected to host the 2021 Division II and Division III women’s lacrosse championships and the 2021 Division III women’s basketball championship.
Roanoke College Athletic Director Scott Allison said bringing these events to town proves to be excellent exposure for the school and the city.
"When we can bring events of this caliber to campus, it gives both participants and spectators a bird’s-eye view of our campus, our facilities and our magnificent setting,” Allison said. “We’re hopeful that those in attendance will return to their respective campuses, to their cities, and spread the good name of Roanoke College.”
