2019 Juried Biennial Exhibition Winners

On January 25th, Olin Hall Galleries announced the winners of the 2019 Juried Biennial Exhibition. The exhibition features works of art from artists within a 200 mile radius of Roanoke College.

The competition juror was Elizabeth Cross, a senior fellow at George Mason University’s Center for the advancement of Well-Being.  Among other accomplishments in the art world, she has designed art and writing programs with the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art, and the National Portrait Gallery.

Dr. Cross judged the 470 pieces submitted down to 88 individual pieces of art created by 49 featured artists for the exhibition. She viewed the works in person the day prior to the opening event to choose the award winners. The art shown varied not only in style, but also in the form of media it was presented in with everything from painting to videography being represented.

The first place prize went to “Landscape Intervention – Painted Desert,” a photograph by Roanoke artist Robert Sulkin. Sulkin took home $500 and will be a featured artist at a future show in the galleries.

The $300 second place prize went to Federico Cuatlacuatl , and the $200 third place prize went to William Wylie. Roanoke College senior Isaac Davis was also one of the featured artists in the showing.

"With this exhibition, I realize that ceramics is a hobby that I have finally managed to become competent at, prompting thoughts as to how I can continue to create after college and get my art more professionally noticed," says Davis, an environmental studies major from Wales.

Honorable mentions went to Andrew Franklin of Roanoke for "Reversible Journey's I," North Carolina artist Virginia Derryberry for "A Few Good Men," and Duane Cregger of Moneta for "Kuebiko.Silver"
