Kuchar receives Fulbright fellowship to Moldova

Dr. Martha Kuchar, chair of the Roanoke College English department, will spend the fall semester teaching in Eastern Europe as a Fulbright Scholar, marking her second time as a recipient of this prestigious award.
Kuchar received a fellowship through the Fulbright Scholar Program to support her sabbatical work in Moldova this fall. Moldova is a small Eastern European country bordered by Ukraine and Romania. Once part of the Russian Empire, it was also one of the republics of the USSR and declared its independence in 1991.
Kuchar will teach business and academic writing courses at Moldova State University in Chisinau, the capital.
While there, Kuchar will consult on pedagogy with faculty at Ion Creanga Pedagogical State University, an English teaching resource center. She also will conduct research on East European literature.
In 2009, Kuchar was a Fulbright scholar to Ukraine.
Kuchar, who has been a professor at Roanoke since 1994, holds a B.A. in English from University at Albany-Suny and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Russian Literature from Cornell University. Her research and teaching interests include the literature of Russia and Eastern Europe, world literature and women's writing, especially from the 19th and 21st centuries.
