President Maxey receives Kiwanis Club Humanitarian Award

The Kiwanis Club of Salem awarded President Michael Maxey with its annual Humanitarian Award during a late November lunch meeting at the Salem Civic Center. The award is given in recognition of “selfless dedication to fellow human beings in their time of need.” Both President Maxey and First Lady Terri Maxey attended the event to receive the award in person.

A spokeswoman for the club said that President Maxey “exemplified what the Humanitarian Award is all about” and expressed appreciation for all that he and Roanoke College do for the local community. Specifically, the award is given to an individual who has demonstrated, over a significant amount of time, dedication to the success of youth, combined with a strong sense of community and family duty. 

“President Maxey leads from his heart and continues to put his whole heart and soul into his community and his family,” said presenter and board member Dr. Peggy Shifflett.

The Kiwanis Club of Salem’s mission is “to serve the children of the world and our community with special concern for their health, safety and development.” They support numerous organizations including 4-H, Challenger Little League, The Salem Food Pantry, Apple Ridge Farm, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and more.

This year the club, along with the City of Salem and the Salem Parks & Recreation Department, are presenting the Salem Christmas Parade, which is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 6, at 6:30 p.m.
