President Maxey’s Weekly Update Oct. 16
October 16, 2020
Dear Maroons -
Today, October 16, there is one active COVID-19 student case at Roanoke College. I ask you all to please continue being thoughtful, diligent and safe. Each of you has contributed to keeping our COVID-19 cases low by wearing your masks, maintaining appropriate distances and putting community health first. Thank YOU!
Earlier this week, I sent news of our plans for Spring 2021 semester. As a reminder, you will receive another communication from Residence Life by November 1 with information regarding move-in times, room sign-ups, and answers to questions about leaving your belongings on campus or staying on campus if extenuating circumstances require you to do so. We’ll also outline updates to our testing and quarantine plan for the spring.
Please look out for that email as you make your plans for spring. I’m looking forward to seeing many of you on campus next semester!
Tonight at 7 on the Back Quad, there will be a bonfire and live music. I encourage you to enjoy hot cider, hot chocolate, and relax as the weekend kicks off. Thanks to CAB for organizing these safe, fun events for everyone.
Also, on Saturday, our Outdoor Adventures program is offering an On-Campus Adventures Day that includes yoga on the Back Quad, an “Amazing Race”-style scavenger hunt, slacklining, outdoor Olympics, and more. They will be conducting workshops on practical knot tying and survival skills. The day will wind down, appropriately, with a campfire and s’mores. You do need to register for this so please check out the link and consider signing up.
There are a wealth of activities happening on campus next week. You will find a list of them at roanoke.edu/events. Just a few of next week’s activities include: Zumba on the Quad; Theologies on Tap; the Roanoke River Currents Conference; readings from visiting writer and award-winning author Sofia Samatar; programs by the History and Math departments and a NokeLive session with recent alumni who worked on the film, “Daylily Day.”
A reminder: If you have COVID-19 symptoms, or if you are worried about your health for any reason, please reach out to Student Health and Counseling Services at (540) 375-2286. We want to treat you and to help avoid any spread of COVID-19 to others on campus.
You will find a dashboard on our website, roanoke.edu/covid19, where we report Roanoke College COVID-19 cases on a weekly basis. Questions may also be sent to questions@roanoke.edu, or you may call (540) 375-2244 and leave a voicemail with your question.
Keep up the good work and be well, Maroons.
President Mike Maxey
