Roanoke College assists with new Salem 9/11 Memorial
October 26, 2015
Roanoke College helped complete the 9/11 Memorial in Salem at its new home. The memorial is now located in front of Fire Station One on Market Street in downtown Salem. The 16,000 pound steel beams from the World Trade Center were refurbished and moved to the site in the heart of downtown Salem.
The memorial was originally located at Olde Virginia Brick and was scheduled to be sold along with the business when it closed. A public outcry helped keep the monument in Salem. The tower piece was removed from the sale and offered to the city at no charge. Municipal leaders jumped at a chance and the community came together to create the new memorial.
Roanoke College donated the bricks for the plaza around the memorial. Bob Shupe and Brian Burnett laid 1,700 brick pavers around the memorial. City of Salem staff and many businesses around the city contributed to the project with labor and materials.
A ceremony was held this year on Sept. 11 and now that all the work is completed, it will be officially dedicated on Sept. 11, 2016, the 15th anniversary of the attack on the U.S.
Roanoke College was pleased to help give this important memorial a new home in downtown Salem.
