Summer program gives high schoolers taste of college life

Packing up everything and moving to college can be scary for many students, but knowing what to expect can help.
Several rising high school juniors and seniors are learning about college life first hand this month as part of the Roanoke College Summer Institute.
This is the second year that Roanoke has hosted this program that prepares students for their future college experiences.
It gives students an opportunity to live on campus and take real college courses. They pick one of six Intellectual Inquiry classes offered at Roanoke. The class meets once a day for two hours.
It’s a genuine, authentic classroom environment for the students.

During the students' free time, they are learning about research opportunities at Roanoke, college essay tips and the application process.
Other free time is spent exploring the city of Salem. They are bowling at Lee-Hi Lanes, a bowling alley, trying out local restaurants and more.
This year's Summer Institute includes students from several parts of the East Coast, from Pennsylvania to New York to North Carolina.
