Roanoke College employees recognized for star work
January 07, 2015
Three staff members who represent various facets of Roanoke College life, from landscaping and grounds to work in Olin Hall and campus housekeeping, received high honors at the College last month.
Bill Martin, manager of landscaping and grounds, Ronda Philips, Olin Hall coordinator, and Leigh Guidi, a member of the College's housekeeping team, received the annual Service to All Roanoke Award during a holiday banquet.
The award, known as the STAR Award, recognizes noteworthy accomplishments and service at the College across several employment categories.
Bill Martin, who works tirelessly to maintain Roanoke's campus beauty, was recognized for his dedication and attentiveness to the College's appearance. As the manager of landscaping and grounds, he is often on campus working in the early morning hours and even on many Saturdays at Kerr Stadium. Martin's work is likely one reason that Roanoke was named the 18thmost beautiful campus in the country by the Princeton Review in 2011.
Ronda Philips was lauded for her work managing Olin Hall effectively and efficiently. In her role as Olin coordinator, she juggles many different tasks and attends to the needs of the Fine Arts Department faculty and staff as well as building-related issues. She also helps faculty in their event planning efforts.
Leigh Guidi works primarily as a housekeeper in the College's Bast Center. She was described as a person who cares about her work and others. Called a model employee, she often knits and bakes gifts for co-workers.
The STAR Award is given to nominated Roanoke employees in exempt, nonexempt and hourly categories. Winners receive $1,000.
