Roanoke College to commemorate Sept. 11 anniversary

Roanoke College will commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks with several remembrance events on Sunday and Monday.
Sunday, Sept. 11
- Members of the Sigma Chi fraternity and others will gather at the fraternity's house on Roanoke's Elizabeth Campus at 8:30 a.m. to remember victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, including alumnus Stephen LaMantia '85. LaMantia worked for Cantor Fitzgerald, a financial services firm with an office on the 105th floor of the World Trade Center's North Tower. He was president of Sigma Chi his senior year at Roanoke. The gathering will be held at the memorial for LaMantia, which stands in front of the Sigma Chi fraternity house. At 8:46 a.m., Joe Ghobrial '04, a member of Salem Fire/EMS, will raise the U.S. flag to half-staff.
- Individuals will ring the College's bell on the main campus at specific increments on Sunday morning to represent the times of the different Sept. 11 attacks. The bell ringing will begin at 8:46 a.m. and end at 10:28 a.m.
Monday, Sept. 12
- Roanoke will hold a memorial service at 9:50 a.m. at the campus flagpoles on High Street. The service will include the ringing of the College's bell, prayer and speakers. Some student veterans will share their memories of Sept. 11.
