A statement from SGA, BSA, and Shades of Maroon
June 03, 2020
Dear Maroons,
The Student Government Association, Black Student Alliance, and Shades of Maroon have voted to pass a joint resolution in support of black students, community members, and Americans and to condemn acts of prejudice and hatred. We stand beside those who strive to make our community a more inclusive place. Additionally, we believe every person, especially those in authority, should be held accountable for their actions.
As Roanoke College students, it is often told to us that we should “Live on Purpose.” However, we cannot ignore that many Americans are not granted this option and instead are targeted for the color of their skin. We, as a student body, cannot be silent on these injustices that impact the black community, many of our students, and those across the United States. We expect our students to stand against acts of racism, hatred, and bigotry not only on campus but in their personal lives.
We encourage the student body to do their own research and to educate themselves on these pressing matters. As an educational institution, we pride ourselves in providing students the opportunity to explore the world from not only an intellectual perspective, but also a social and moral perspective. The SGA promotes the college’s goal to produce “resourceful, informed, and responsible citizens” by encouraging the student body to bear witness to the history being made and take the world, which we all live in, into their own hands. Take the time to do research regarding the policies and issues most important to your community. Make your voices heard in our democracy. Additionally, remember that it is your responsibility to discover the facts and history of the issues at hand — we are the ones responsible for our own values and education.
Furthermore, the BSA promotes “the diversity and understanding, to uplift and support culture, to promote unity, and provide support for black students and the community.” During these times we feel it is important to voice our concerns about the country’s current state. In these uncertain times we encourage productive dialogue going forward concerning the rising racial tensions of our country. The goal of BSA is to “increase awareness of black contributions, issues, and ideas” and apply these ideals to the current situation. Moving forward, we encourage the student body to actively participate in thought-provoking discussions regarding solutions. Know that we see our Maroons, we hear our Maroons, and we stand by our Maroons.
Moreover, Shades of Maroons prides itself on fostering unity through cooperation of multicultural organizations that support diversity, inclusivity, and social justice. Awareness is the first step in the foundation of being socially conscious about what occurs during these strenuous times. The legacy of racism needs to end and that must begin with an open dialogue and support for minorities here at Roanoke College. This begins with us — healing starts with individuals who are willing to venture for change, justice, and equality. An openness to seek perspectives and listen to those who are forced to deal with systematic racism and injustices that are thrown at them daily in this country. Shades of Maroon is committed to creating a forum that will uphold its own foundation and sincerely willing to create an open dialogue on issues that member organizations within it are concerned about and work toward solutions. It is all our responsibilities as Roanoke College students to ensure that our campus is a safe and inclusive place for minorities.
Remember to take care of yourselves. In times like this, making sure that you are mentally, physically, and spiritually safe and sound is paramount. All students and student organizations should endeavor to foster a welcoming and safe environment for their peers. We cannot enact change and stand up for what we believe in if we are not supporting ourselves and one another.
In all, remember what Roanoke College stands for. Our Academic Catalog states that we stand for Freedom with Purpose. Martin Luther believes that freedom “includes both ‘freedom from’ varieties of oppression and ‘freedom for’ service in community.” Finally, Roanoke College states that we, as students should have “a desire to contribute to the common good at Roanoke College, in the Roanoke Valley, and beyond.”
Stay safe Maroons, we have your back,
Student Government Association
