After a successful run on campus, Theatre Roanoke College’s dreamy production of “Sleeping Handsome” is going on tour.
The cast and crew were invited to perform the fairy-tale-with-a-twist for children in local schools and Wonder Universe, a children’s museum in Christiansburg, where they’ll put on a public show at 10 a.m. Sunday, April 28.
The tour has allowed TRC students to practice their craft for a new type of audience and get hands-on experience in managing the demands and logistics of a traveling show. It’s also been an opportunity to strengthen bonds with the community and celebrate children’s storytelling.
"Children's theater deserves more love, and Lizzie and Ruthie’s performances are so impressive," said Lia Shaw '24, assistant stage manager for the production, referring to stars Lizzie Clay ’25 and Ruthie Nutt ’27.
"Sleeping Handsome," directed by fine arts lecturer Danielle Barre, is set in a once-upon-a-time kingdom whose inhabitants — including fairies, queens and talking dogs — need to find a way to break a magic spell that puts the prince to sleep.
The play invites audiences of all ages to enjoy a fantastical, wonder-filled journey. TRC students got to partake in a Q&A with playwright Bill D’Agostino earlier this year.
The tour’s grand finale will be the Wonder Universe performance. The show is open to the public with admission included in the price of museum entry. Wonder Universe is located at 782 New River Road #812, Christiansburg, VA 24073.
