Two trees removed on campus

Those returning to campus for the spring semester might notice a change in the College's landscape. Landscaping and Grounds employees removed two trees on campus during break due to bore infestations, Landscaping and Grounds Manager Bill Martin says.

One, an elm tree in front of Lucas Hall, has long been treated for Dutch elm disease. The treatment for the disease was working, but the tree recently developed a bore infestation that made the tree a hazard.

The other tree, an ash tree at parking lot P-13, was dead and a hazard as well. The tree died from emerald ash borers. Some of the other ash trees on campus are also being treated for emerald ash borers, which Martin says are a huge problem for most ash trees.

Landscaping and Grounds has purchased two elm trees to be planted near the same area of the elm removed.

Roanoke College is proud of its beautiful tree-laden campus, and those in the campus community aren’t the only ones who have taken notice. The Arbor Day Foundation recognized Roanoke College as a Tree Campus USA 2019.
