Education. Trust. Connection. These are the building blocks for not only healthy communities, but for healthy governments, said Supreme Court Historical Society Executive Director James Duff.
Duff spoke to over 100 people on campus to mark Constitution Day and celebrate the anniversary of the signing of our nation's foundational document. The crowd included students, faculty and members of the region's legal community. The annual Constitution Day address is sponsored by Woods Rogers Vandeventer Black and the Turk Pre-Law Program.

The address centered on the history of the high court and the importance of preserving an independent judiciary. Duff also quoted Thomas Jefferson’s hopes of the new nation cultivating an educated citizenry. He urged listeners to stay informed about the workings of government, seek out facts and not fall prey to forces that strive to divide people.
Younger generations can help lead the way in that work, he added. “Students, I think, can be engaged in educating friends and others about how important it is,” Duff said. “… People need to pay attention.”
