The Donald L. Jordan Endowment for the Humanities supports programs and events at Roanoke College that further understanding of literature, history, philosophy and religion, foreign languages, social thought and the history and criticism of the arts. Each year a portion of the endowment will be reserved for grants to support events and programs initiated and designed by faculty or staff members. In addition to providing funds for campus events, the Jordan Endowment is also now sponsoring grants for Faculty/Staff Seminars and Innovative Classroom Projects.
Campus Events. The review committee is open to proposals for a variety of types of events including public lectures, conferences, open forums/panel discussions, and public debates. Preference will be given to events that will reach a wide spectrum of students, faculty, and staff rather than serving a particular course or department.
Faculty/Staff Seminars. All faculty and staff are invited to apply for funds (up to $500) to support a series of discussions and/or presentations on topics in the humanities. Funds may be used to purchase books, refreshments, and other necessary materials. Additional funds may be available for outside speakers. Recent seminar series have focused on Jacques Derrida's The Gift of Death from an interdisciplinary perspective.
Innovative Classroom Projects. Faculty in the Humanities are encouraged to apply for funds (usually up to $500) to support innovative classroom projects that help students engage with issues in the humanities. Funds may be used to purchase supplies, books, and other necessary materials.
