Susan Jacoby began her writing career as a reporter for The Washington Post. The Age of American Unreason is her eighth book. Her previous books include Moscow Conversations, Wild Justice: The Evolution of Revenge, and Half-Jew: A Daughter's Search for Her Family's Buried Past. For more than 25 years Jacoby has published articles and essays in The New York Times Magazine, Washington Post Book World, Los Angeles Times Book Review, Newsday, Harper's, The Nation, and Vogue, among other publications.

Weitz, Distinguished McKnight University Professor and holder of the Arsham and Charlotte Ohanessian Chair in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Minnesota, will speak on "Why Was the 20th Century the Century of Genocides?" Weitz is author of Weimar Germany: Promise and Tragedy, A Century of Genocide: Utopias of Race and Nation, and Creating German Communism, 1890-1990: From Popular Protests to Socialist State. Manuel DeLanda, Columbia University School of Architecture and the University of Pennsylvania, will speak on "City Life: The Economic, Biological and Linguistic Dynamics of Cities." DeLanda is a philosopher with wide-ranging interests and has written on a variety of topics such as economics, thermodynamics, warfare, and artificial life and intelligence. He is the author of War in the Age of Intelligent Machines, A Thousand Years of Nonlinear History Intensive Science, and Virtual Philosophy

Matthew Restall, Penn State University, Professor of Colonial Latin American History, Anthropology, and Women's Studies, will speak on "Debunking the Myths of the Spanish Conquest." Restall is author of The Maya World: Seven Myths of the Spanish Conquest (2005), and is currently writing a history of African slaves and free people of African descent in colonial Yucatan.
