The sociology department has built a strong connection to and supports the student organization Earthbound, which is committed to environmental awareness including promoting recycling and energy conservation. We joined forces and have begun implementing the "Greening of Trout Hall" project. In our first year, we started a recycling program for plastic and paper and laid out a plan for reducing water and electricity use for this upcoming academic year.
Recent co-sponsored events include the CFL light bulb giveaway, viewing Killowatt Ours, a documentary on reducing energy use, attending the Powershift conference in Washington DC on climate control, and lectures by community guest speakers on local environmental concerns and a field trip to visit towns in West Virginia affected by mountain top removal to harvest coal.
