Roanoke College celebrated the arrival of 539 new freshmen and transfer students during the kickoff to move-in weekend. Students and families were greeted by a phalanx of campus volunteers who helped them get settled in.
The festivities began at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, with a ceremonial ringing of the campus bell led by Roanoke College President Frank Shushok Jr. The bell was sounded 28 times to mark the arrival of the Class of 2028.
The incoming class hails from 31 states and 13 countries. They’re arriving at Roanoke College at an exciting time that includes the launch of new degree programs, new co-curricular initiatives and the start of construction on a new leading-edge STEM facility.
“You’ve come here excited to grow and learn through new experiences,” Shushok said during the President’s Welcome, an event that brings the new class together to hear from campus leaders and commemorate the start of their journey as Maroons.
“We believe in you,” Shushok said. “Thank you all for joining the Maroon family. We are better because you're here.”
Move-in weekend marks the start of a slate of celebratory events to welcome students to campus in the leadup to the first day of classes, which falls on Wednesday, Aug. 28. Between now and then, game nights, athletic events, open houses and more will be held to acclimate students to their new campus home.
"We’re so happy that you’re here,” said Student Government Association President Joshua Masten '24, “and we can’t wait to get to know each and every one of you.”
