New Student Checklist
Welcome to the Maroon community!
We're excited to help you start your college journey. Below, you'll find checklists to help you stay on track for the fall semester.
You can start many tasks as soon as you create your Roanoke College password and account (Important First Steps). Some items, like your student information forms, take more time to complete. Tackle the lists in manageable phases to avoid rushing before deadlines.
We'll also send out email reminders and other helpful updates along the way. If you have any questions, please let us know. We're here for you!
- IT Questions: Helpdesk, 540-375-2225 (Option 2)
- General Questions: New Student Orientation, orientation@roanoke.edu
Important First Steps
Create Your Account
- Set up your password: Use the temporary password link sent to you via email to log into "My Account." Then click "Change Password" in the menu bar. The new password you pick will be used across multiple platforms and apps.
- Set up multifactor authentication to keep your account secure: Get security codes sent to you on your phone or Roanoke College's Microsoft Authenticator App.
- Set up your email app: Email is one of the most important ways to get campus messages. Stay connected by activating the Outlook email app on your phone and turning on notifications.
NOTE: As a Roanoke College student, you agree to comply with our standards and policies on technology use. With that in mind, be sure to keep your account information private.
When setting up multifactor authentication, use your (the student's) personal cell phone or email. Using a family member's device is in violation of IT policies and will create challenges in the long run.
Before June 1
Complete Your Student Profile
- Fill out important forms in your enrollment profile portal. Make sure all information is accurate. You may want help from your parents, guardians or other supporters:
- Summer Orientation Registration
- Student Information Form
- Academic Achievement Form (freshmen only)
- Academic Integrity, Student Code of Conduct & Sexual Misconduct Statement Agreements
- Financial Responsibility Agreement
- Fill out your health forms: Parts of these forms will require documentation from your healthcare provider or state health department.
- Upload a photo for your Maroon ID: Be sure to read the list of photo requirements before hitting submit.
Start Your Housing Registration
- Sign your housing agreement: You'll need the student ID# previously emailed to you to complete this step.
- Fill out your housing profile (optional): Let potential roommates know more about you so you can find a good match. This option is available starting March 28.
Complete Your Assessments
- Complete your language placement test: Complete your assessment or an exemption survey to determine your foreign language course requirements. More info about the requirements can be found in the Language Placement Test FAQ section of Inquire.
- Complete your CliftonStrengths assessment: You'll receive a link and sign-in code via email. CliftonStrengths is a tool that helps you identify your natural talents so you can build on them. On average, it takes about 30-45 minutes to complete.
- Complete your academic integrity module: Learn the essential principles of academic honesty for our community and how to steer clear of misconduct.
Prepare for Course Registration
- Watch our short introduction videos on advising and course registration (links below): Get familiar with the process and requirements before you sign up for fall classes.
- Video 01: Starting your academic journey at Roanoke College
- Video 02: General Education INQ at Roanoke College
- Video 03: Exploring Majors at Roanoke College
- Fill out your advising form: Share your interests and top course picks so we can help you start building your fall schedule. This step can be completed after watching the advising and course registration videos.
- Set up Navigate360 Student (App Store. Google Play.): This app lets you make appointments with professors, review your schedule and more. Your login will be your Roanoke College username and password.
Connect with Accessible Education Services (optional)
- Students with disabilities who need accommodations in their housing or classes should contact the Office of Accessible Education Services. The office is open year-round for requests, but contacting them earlier helps create a smoother transition.
Before July 15
Complete Your Housing Registration
- Select your housing: You'll receive an email with a timeslot to pick your preferred room using the housing portal. Emails will begin going out June 30. Students need to sign their housing agreement before a timeslot can be assigned.
Manage Your E-Bill and E-Pay
- Check your billing statement: Roanoke uses e-billing to pay for tuition, fees, room and board. Statements are uploaded to Self Service for students and to person proxy for parents/guardians (optional, see below). Your fall term statement will be available starting July 10. Payment is due by August 10.
- Set up person proxy (optional): Student records are protected by The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. You can choose to grant a third party, such as your parents, access to your records through the person proxy feature. That authorization allows someone to view your information and discuss your bills with the Business Office. This step can be completed starting June 15.
Before August 15
Textbooks, Parking & Move-In Prep
- Get your textbooks: Books can be purchased or rented (new or used, physical books or ebooks) through our online bookstore. Your account will be pre-loaded with a list of your required and optional course materials.
- Get a parking decal: If you're bringing a vehicle to campus, you'll need to purchase a parking decal. This option is available starting August 1. Decals will be delivered to your campus mailbox, which you can access beginning move-in weekend.
- Get your Mobile Maroon Card: Download our app (Transact eAccounts Mobile) to set up your Mobile Maroon Card. This is a digital student ID that you’ll use daily for meal plan swipes, residence hall access and more. This step can be completed after your Maroon ID photo is both uploaded and approved. Be sure to complete that process first.
- Get excited! Move-in weekend is almost here. This year, new students move in on Saturday, August 23, 2025. Double-check your email for your assigned check-in time, move-in instructions and Welcome Week schedule.
