Tuition Remission & Tuition Exchange
Employee Tuition Remission & Tuition Exchange Benefits
Our tuition benefits are valuable education benefits that grant employees and their families access to furthering their education. Employees become eligible for tuition benefits including Tuition Remission and Tuition Exchange after one year of service in a benefit-eligible regular position. For complete details about the tuition benefits policy, please refer to Appendix C in the staff handbook.
Tuition Remission
The Tuition Remission program refers to a waiver of tuition to attend Roanoke College. To assist in furthering education, regular full-time and part-time employees are eligible for a remission of tuition fees for employees, spouses and dependent children after one year of employment. The tuition remission benefit applies tuition charges only. The employee must schedule courses which do not interfere with their regular schedule.
Tuition Exchange
Roanoke College also currently participates in several Tuition Exchange programs with other institutions. Thus, undergraduate tuition benefits for dependent children may be available with certain other schools. The Tuition Exchange program provides an opportunity for eligible dependent children to apply for a tuition exchange scholarship to earn an undergraduate degree at member colleges at a significant savings.
What are the Tuition Exchange networks?
Roanoke College belongs to several Tuition Exchange networks.
- Tuition Exchange – hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the United States and several internationally.
- The Council of Independent Colleges Tuition Exchange Program (CIC – TEP Tuition Exchange) – over 400 colleges and universities throughout the country.
- Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Tuition Exchange (ELCA Tuition Exchange)– Lutheran affiliated colleges and universities throughout the country.
Whether an employee or an eligible dependent wants to enroll full-time, part-time, take classes for a grade or auditing a class, the following application procedures apply.
To apply for either tuition benefit, the employee must fill out the appropriate internal form for this benefit by December 31st of the year prior to the academic year in which they are requesting benefits. Please keep in mind that this benefit is not a guarantee of admittance to a school. The prospective student must apply with Admissions and follow the normal application and registration processes of Roanoke College or the exchange institution.
For Tuition Remission benefits, the employee, spouse or eligible dependent child must complete the Tuition Remission Request form by December 31st of the year prior to the academic year in which they are requesting benefits and follow the normal application and registration processes of Roanoke College. Summer school requests may be submitted by December 31st along with your academic year request or by April 1st preceding the summer terms.
For Tuition Exchange benefits, eligible dependent children may apply to any of the three exchange networks to which the College belongs. All tuition exchange scholarships are not guaranteed but are competitive awards based on a limited number of available spots. Be sure to research guidelines and deadlines for each member school since they vary by college.
There is now a 2-step process to apply (1) submit the internal Tuition Exchange Request form by December 31st prior to the academic year in which requesting benefits and (2) apply to the specific Tuition Exchange network.
- Tuition Exchange applications (EZ app) should be submitted on the Tuition Exchange website.
- Council of Independent Colleges Tuition Exchange Program (CIC-TEP) applications should be submitted here.
- ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) Tuition Exchange Program does not require this additional step.
Only new students, those who have not previously used Tuition Exchange benefits, should complete the steps above. If your dependent is currently receiving Tuition Exchange benefits, you won't need to complete any additional renewal requests after the initial request.
