This course examines the development of German national identity through studies of several critical stages, including: the Battle of Leipzig, the Revolution of 1918-19 and the Weimar Republic, the terror of the National Socialist regime, and the collapse of the German Democratic Republic and the Berlin Wall. The class will focus on the particular experiences of Jewish Germans, and will emphasize the experience of living like a local rather than a tourist.
