When does Scottish identity as such begin? Scotland has boasted complex and prosperous settlements for over 5,000 years, yet artistic representations seeking to define Scotland as unique to itself appear about 300 years ago. We will be exploring the places and people that Scottish artists have written about and depicted in pictures over centuries. What comes out of the mix of art, including folklore, history, ceremony, for example, to make a distinctly Scottish identity as Scottish artists have depicted it? How has this artistic identity changed from Braveheart to Poor Things? We will be intentional about comparing Scottish artistic representations to our own, especially in the Southern United States.
