Loren (Messick) LaPorte ’08, former Maroons softball standout, made history this year as head coach of the James Madison University softball team. In June, the team capped its 2021 season with a first-time appearance in the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.
The team reached the series semifinals before falling to No. 1-seeded University of Oklahoma, but in the process won the hearts of fans across the country.
LaPorte gives much of the credit to her coaching success to the tools she acquired and talent she honed during her years at Roanoke College.
“I loved everything about Roanoke,” LaPorte says. “I think it was a good place for me, and it really set me up for my future.”
