About this issue
Welcome to the new and improved Roanoke College Magazine! This issue ushers in a fresh era for our publication as we unveil a sleek design that incorporates our new branding, as well as more eye-popping photos and engaging stories from your favorite college campus.
Our cover story, for example, offers a sampler platter of student-faculty research projects to give readers more insight into experiential learning at Roanoke. How does cattle grazing impact the environment in Virginia? How do TikTok beauty filters impact self-esteem? Can morel mushrooms be cultivated? Can tomatoes pull heavy metals from the soil? Students at Roanoke are doing much more than discussing questions like this in class – they’re diving into hands-on research with faculty in campus laboratories or out in the field, setting themselves up for success after graduation.
Also in this issue, we introduce you to some incredible alumni, including Gaston Ocampo ’20, who is strengthening ties between Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean; Dessa Gypalo ’07, an Obama Foundation USA leader; and Ryan Hupp ’10, who is coaching Roanoke’s fledgling mock trial team. We’ll also introduce you to our football helmet design and a new women’s sport in the athletics lineup.
We hope you’ll enjoy this issue! Please get in touch with feedback or class notes at rcmagazine@roanoke.edu.
